Joss Stone is no one’s puppet. In fact, her defiant attitude is probably what contributed towards her record label EMI screwing her over. She says that the label were not happy with her latest album ‘Colour Me Free’ simply because they felt it had no commercial appeal. Her response? “I understand they are running a business, but I couldn’t give a f*ck about churning out No.1 pop hits. I was doing something I believed in. I got my way but with a catch - no budget - well that’s fine by me”.
This makes me so triumphant and positive to support real talent. A lot of record companies want their talented acts to ’sell out’ and release pop music to cater to the masses. Kudos to Joss for sticking to her guns by putting out the quality music she feels so passionately about. Her album was well-produced and it’s sad that the label refused to fund her project just because she fought hard to put out good music. If more artists stood up to their labels and made the transition to go independent, it’s highly likely, there would be less oversaturated rubbish plaguing the airwaves.
