Yesterday afternoon, four people were hospitalised and 56 were slightly injured when thousands of JLS fans surged to the front of the stage during the switching on of the Christmas lights in my hometown Birmingham. Top star acts such as Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott and the Sugababes had been scheduled to perform at the event but police took the decision to cancel the show following the crush chaos. Organisers only expected 5,000 people to turn up but a strong-heavy crowd of over 27,000 people showed causing havoc. Peep the report below:
As many of you know, I was actually making my way to the concert. But then I recieved a warning NOT to as things were getting out of control. I took heed to the warning. Whilst I made it into town, I did not go anywhere near the concert. I was with younger family members so I had a responsibility. The warning came from a friend of mine who was already at the concert and luckily escaped uninjured.
We did go to see Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’ though, so it’s not like my day went to waste. The concert did not start until 2pm, but crowds had gathered at 10:30-11am. By the time it was 1:30pm, things were getting hectic. I thought that would have served as a WARNING not to make the concert go ahead. But once JLS hit the stage, the whole place went manic. When the metal barriers collapsed there was a security breech, and the police were completely outnumbered.
Personally, I think it was naive for Birmingham City Council to think only 5,000 people were going to attend, especially with such a great line-up. Yesterday’s disaster and injuries certainly could have been avoided. SMH.
